(More customer reviews)This collector series Doll of the Wold Barbie is a reproduction of the first 1979 series version. She is a great collector series doll, usually found for a good, reasonable price, but I wouldn't suggest her as a great toy for kids.
She is a Superstar sculpt, like the original, but she differs from her in several ways. First, her facial screening (at least her lips) are a bit brighter (a bright pinky red)--a la 90s style. And the 1979's lovely bouffant-style updo has been changed slightly to a curly ponytail, which is cut short in the middle, and curled on the outside in longer pieces. (You'll want to keep this doll's hair in the original ponytail, since she has that short piece in the middle to help the curls fall nicely around the ponytail. It looks a little weird if you take it down.)
I don't own the 1979 version, but I'd sure like to. I'm sure there are differences in their costumes, but this 1990s version's outfit is made according to her price point: pink, polyester and cute, but not perfect. It's got rows of lace sewn in the underside of the skirt, and it's permanently sewn up on one side to show off her left leg. The outfit is removable, however.
She has a plastic necklace with a sticker of a cameo, and a plastic "feather" in her hair, which feels just a little cheap, too, but the little garter is a nice touch. And its cheap feeling really doesn't detract from her sweet Steffie sculpt face.
Be aware that if you are picky about smokey smelling dolls, this one in particular--I'm not sure if it's her dress or accessories--tends to pick up smoke odor very easily. I had to throw away her pantyhose and replace them all together. They are fishnets, so that might be the problem. Just be sure to ask the (third party) seller if smoke odor is a problem for you.
At any rate, you can often find her between $10-20 for a never-removed-from-box doll, plus shipping--so don't pay more than that. And for that price, you can't beat the sweet face and adorable outfit. (The more expensive one is the original 1979 version.)
