There's something about this doll that I find quite striking. Maybe it's the visual contrast between the darkness of her hair and the fairness of her skin. Maybe it's the combination of blue eyes and dark hair, along with the blue outfit.
Her hair is shorter than many Barbies', falling to just above her waist, instead of way below it. If I had been into Barbies when I was a child, I would have loved the extra-long hair, but I don't think they made them that way back then. Now my tastes have changed, being a grown-up & all, and I prefer that her hair looks more like a real person's.
I love the boots. They look great, and they actually stay on her feet & don't get lost, unlike most Barbie shoes.
Re: durability. The boots & purse seem very durable, unlike the dress & shopping bag. The top & skirt of the dress are held together by a plastic ring, & it doesn't look like it will stand up to much rough treatment. Like our other dolls, this one undresses for many baths with my daughter, so I guess we'll find out whether the dress will last.
Another reviewer mentioned wishing for Barbies who were more modestly dressed. I understand, and I wouldn't let my daughter wear this outfit either, but I think maybe the dolls are for pretend, so they can wear fantasy outfits their owner wouldn't. I mean, isn't that the point of fashion dolls, or fashion magazines, or fashion shows, for that matter? I don't know, it's all new to me, since I've been a Barbie fan for less than 30 days.
Note: I have decided to upgrade all my Mattel doll reviews to at least 4 stars for durability and educational value.
I think all Mattel dolls are well-made and durable. I give them 5 stars if the clothes & accessories seem durable as well.
Moreover, I have decided fashion dolls are inherently educational, with or without politically correct bells & whistles such as diplomas, stethoscopes, or space station blueprints. Children learn how to dress & undress them, an important skill which builds coordination. They also learn about choosing and combining clothes, an important and worthwhile skill. The fact that it's a traditionally feminine skill does not make it less valuable. I think they also have the potential to teach children to care for valued possessions. So they all get 4 stars for educational value from me, 5 stars if they have something extra to offer.
