For many years we lived in a small condo/apartment, and yet I had always wanted a dollhouse of my very own. After seeing this for the first time at a dollhouse store, I decided that THIS was perfect.
First of all, this is a 1/2" or 1:24 scale dollhouse. That means that the scale is 1/2" equals 1 Foot. Larger dollhouses are twice the scale: 1" equals 1 Foot. So this dollhouse is small enough to sit easily on top of a bookshelf!
It has three levels (with stairs), as well as a balcony. The light on top is a functioning lamp, and can be used either as a nightlight or the house can be placed on a larger window sill for true lighthouse lovers and used to decorate!
Real Good toys makes awesome dollhouses, the wood is much heavier and studier than others, and the lighthouse goes together easily. Because of the size of the furniture (rather than the sturdiness of the lighthouse), I recommend this for older children who can handle delicate items.
It is difficult to find dolls perfectly scaled for this house - 3" equals 6 ft - so a doll should be around this size. I found some that were close by folding a dollar bill in half (3") to measure. Some of the smaller Polly Pocket dolls worked OK.
Just be careful if you order dollhouse furniture to purchase the right size! If you want to make your own, there are a lot of ideas online that can be rescaled to fit, and you can often find tiny accessories in Scrapbook sections of your local craft store!
To get you started (and to help you perceive the size), a toothpaste cap makes a great lampshade - you can glue it on top of a marble or create a base using polymer clay.
This was my first - and is still my favorite!
