(More customer reviews)The Pink Fairy Gown arrived packaged neatly and professionally in a sealed plastic bag. On arrival, it appeared to be a beautiful dress. It is made from better-quality fabric - nothing cheap. The dress was a birthday gift for my granddaughter, so I didn't want to open the plastic, but I did look at the seams through the packaging. The garment appeared to be sewn well. The wings are about the weight of an artificial silk flower and just as bright, sprayed with opaque glitter. The lace over-lining is good quality - just the right weight with delicate detail that is similar to chantilly lace. The pink layer is heavy-weight fabric with a bit of a sheen. The butterfly applique is sewn with 17 machine-stitched pearlescent sequins The over-all appearance of the dress as seen through the plastic is elegant.
When my granddaughter first opened her gift, she was pretty pleased. When she tried to fasten the garment on her Barbie doll, however, we found that the sizing was off just enough to make it impossible to fasten the velcro completely. I have included a picture to demonstrate. Since she had problems with it, she lost interest in it pretty quickly. I was so disappointed. When I tried to help her close the dress, I saw the inside of the dress up close. There were many, many long loose threads where the skirt of the dress is gathered to the bodice. Then I saw that the hem, although turned before stitched, was unravelling. The straps are made from low-quality woven ribbon attached by two machine stitches. The butterfly applique appears to be wobbly, but it is secured with an entire line of machine stitching in the front of the bodice.
Don't get me wrong - I have seen other Barbie-style formalwear made from cheap fabric. I am not complaining about the fabric. Also, I have seen Barbie-style dresses that have clashing designs and awful color combinations. This fabric is neither cheap nor clashing. Just be advised that most people with sewing experience would not give the workmanship of the garment a high rating. Impatient little hands will probably pull at the many loose threads of the seams. The straps could easily be pulled completely off the garment.
I compared the craftsmanship of this garment to two other dresses I purchased for the birthday gift-- Mattel Barbie items. The Mattel clothing had unravelling seams, as well, but not to such a great extent. The threads were close-cropped, and they were much fewer in number. Also, the Mattel clothing did not have any decorative or functional portions which seemed easy to pull-off, like the Butterfly straps. The Mattel velcro closures were longer, making it easier to place garments on the doll. The Mattel fasteners were not too snug but rather "comfy." Prices of the garments were vastly different - the Mattel garments were on sale for $2.99 each. The artistic concept of the Butterfly Fairy Gown could still be considered positive; store shelves carry Mattel-to-go in work-style, ahtletic, and summer clothing, but I have never seen anything close to the Fairy Gown design. That's why I purchased it in the first place.
In short, the Pink Fairy Gown with Butterfly Wings is a pretty little dress, but it's nonfitting in the bodice. Even though the unravelling fabric may not bother your child, the velcro placement may be a problem. If you are a collector purchasing this dress for your collection, your satisfaction will be greater than that of a child who will be playing with the dress often. Sorry to point out so many negatives about the garment, but, I would want customers to rate what they buy on line honestly so that I am aware of product flaws and shortcomings before I make my purchase.
