Once again Mattel has gone and outdone themselves, and kudos to their corporate decision to serve alcohol at pitch meetings, because sauced up executives can be the only plausible explanation of how these dolls ever made it from concept to production.
In a season that brought us a cat that pees and a dog that eats its own poop, Mattel went and topped themselves with the Let's Go Disco series of My Scene dolls - the little ladies that teach our girls too much fabric in a skirt is bad and underpants only get in the way of a really good photo. I suppose getting licensing agreements from Britney and Paris were too expensive, but we all know who these dolls are modeled after - I swear I look at them waiting to hear one of them utter, "That's Hot".
I suppose Paris and Britney can't be all to blame for the skanktastic downward spiral of the My Scene collection - after all Mattel made the mistake of modeling one after a true role model to addicts everywhere - Lindsay Lohan, the only hard-partying hospital visiting Barbie doll and once they opened Pandora's box, we knew she'd get her claws into the other dolls and drag them down with her.
Perhaps their other holiday-release the squeaky clean, Oscar winning My Scene Hilary Duff doll (and please that's a whole other form of ridiculous) will be able to clothe them and set them straight. That's one fashion doll catfight I need front row seats for.
My daughter got the My Scene Disco on clearance some time ago. I figured she had quite the collection of My Scene and Barbie dolls, so any of them would be able to hang at the Disco. Oh how wrong I was - not realizing how schooled she was in the ways of the world and the velvet rope, I was surprised and humored to see she had taken the rope and stand from the Lindsay Lohan doll set and placed it at the front of the disco - with New Look Ken as the bouncer. LMAO, he is a good choice, just the right amount of gay to know what and who is hot and not - seems the majority of dolls were being turned away for not dressing properly or not being famous enough.
I decided someone needed to frequent the Disco and get the party started, so why not get a few dolls that went with the set. I assume there are more dolls in the Let's go Disco series, but I was only able to find Madison and Nolee - and let me tell at $19.99 for the pack, it's quite the deal - it's like buy one skank, get one free.
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say I hope I have raised my baby with morals and a brain - that she can discern these are fashion dolls and fake and that dressing like that in real life is not OK with mommy. I suppose the dolls can put out a confusing message - My Scene dolls are younger, hipper Barbie dolls - supposedly in their mid to late teens, and yes I have driven past the high school bus stop and see how some girls dress, and maybe Mattel isn't that far off, but for goodness sake can't these dolls be fashion forward with some more fabric and a very useful item - underpants! Are they actually trying to lead consumers to believe that a half inch of fabric and panties would jack the price up so far no one would buy them - I think not.
In my humble opinion these dolls are barely legal dolls are far too underdressed to be going out in public. They definitely will make a scene at the disco, but not in the way they intended. Like I said, you get two dolls in the set and a few accessories, not extra outfits or overcoats - just naughty bit bearing skirts and tops that barely fit.
First out of the limo and up to the rope is Madison and unlike her Bratz counterpart, she does not have a Passion for Fashion. In fact I think she and Nolee are a bit confused - they seem to think that Glamour Don't means do.
She starts off OK - her hair is nice and stylish her wavy brownish blonde locks look nice and aren't too crispy. They hot below her shoulder blades - too bad they aren't a bit longer to help cover up all the skin she bearing on the top. She has a pair of sunglasses perched upon on her head that can easily be pulled down - so that after boozing it up and passing out she can claim exhaustion rather than acute alcohol poisoning.
Of the two her makeup is less severe, but that's not saying much - I think her darker skin tone makes it seem that way. Her jewelry is not too over the top - earrings, a necklace and bracelets.
From the neck down she is all skin. Her black and white polka dot, belly bearing, spaghetti strap top has a very low neckline - because she wants to make sure the girls get in every photo - the top does tend to shift and we have experienced nip slip. She tries to cover up with a teeny tiny white and black striped shrug, but it really doesn't do much.
Her skirt is about 5 sizes too small - I think she may have gotten her laundry mixed up with Kelly's stuff and grabbed the wrong one. It's a white micro mini with black accents. The ruffled bottom layer hits barely below her cheeks - thank goodness it sits on her hips rather than her waist or there'd be a full moon at every party she goes to.
Next comes Nolee - the worse of the two. Her long dark hair with side swept bangs is very pretty and gives you hope that the rest of her will follow suit. No such luck - the next thing you notice are her large hoop earrings - which may be there to distract you from the combination of heavy makeup on alabaster skin - sort of like Morticia Addams meets the MAC counter. You almost expect her Gomez type escort to grab her arm and start kissing it. I honestly don't know what is worse - her totally 80s blue eye shadow or her dark wine stained lips - not the way I want my teen to wear her makeup. Thank goodness for her sunglasses because when all that good starts to run, at least she can cover up her eyes.
She wears the same type of top as Madison - except in silver/white and almost sheer - that's class all the way. She also has a shrug - which makes me shrug and think - do they have normal sized clothes in Malibu? Her skirt is also uber short and butt bearing - it's done in a satin blue fabric with silver accents.
Both girls wear way to high heels and have the My Scene pop off foot.
They each come with an evening bag (which I swear has more material than the skirt) - big enough to fit a lipstick and sidekick - you know the essentials - after all they need to text each other all night to give updates where the photo ops are.
Each comes with one hand in the classic "bartender get me another one" pose.
I guess in owning these dolls, I can see why Britney had so many oopsies in the past few weeks - there is no way these dolls can sit, bend or get out of the Barbie dream car without everything showing - of course underwear does come in low rise, super low rise and why even bother sizes, so you think they could have found something to put under the skirts.
Overall I find these dolls hysterical - you get two for the price of one and they provide hours of fun at the disco. They certainly have found a way to dress and be scene and teach girls that underwear is always optional - what's not to love.
